TOUGHEND/TEMPERED GLASS
Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension. Such stresses cause the glass, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards as plate glass create. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury. As a result of its safety and strength, toughened glass is used in a variety of demanding applications, including passenger vehicle windows, shower doors, architectural glass doors and tables, refrigerator trays, as a component of bulletproof glass, for diving masks, and various types of plates and cookware. The term tempered glass, in addition to meaning glass that has been heat treated to increase toughness, can refer to glass that has been treated with hydrofluoric acid or other acid.
HEAT STRENGTH GLASS
Heat-strengthened glass is typically specified when additional strength is needed to resist wind pressure, thermal stress or both, and the additional strength or safety break pattern of fully tempered glass is not required. Another advantage of heat-strengthened glass is that when broken, the glass fragments are more similar in size and shape to annealed glass fragments and thus tend to stay in the opening longer than fully tempered glass particles. Although heat-strengthened glass is NOT a safety glazing by building code, this breakage pattern prevents the glass from falling and injuring someone.
LAMINATED GLASS
Laminated glass is a safety and security glass that is made by sandwiching a laminated sheet between two pieces of glass. Laminated glass has the same strength as ordinary glass but it consists of two pieces of glass containing a sandwich of plastic interlayer. If the glass does get broken this interlayer holds the whole piece in place so there is no hole left in the window for an intruder to get in through for example or large free shards that can cut.
INSULATING GLASS
Insulated Glass, often called double glazing, is a combination of two or more panes of glass spaced apart with a spacer bar and hermetically sealed with a primary and secondary sealant to form a single unit with one or more air spaces in between.IGU’s are used in residential as well as in commercial buildings. Some of the common commercial applications include vertical glazing, sloped glazing, overhead glazing, skylights, and both vision and spandrel (non-vision) areas.
FROSTED GLASS
Frosted glass is a clear sheet of glass that is turned opaque through the process of sandblasting or acid etching. Because of light scattering during transmission, the glass comes out as translucent, obscuring visibility even as it transmits light. This effect of frosting can also be achieved by applying a film of vinyl that acts as a stencil on the surface of the glass or through canned frosted glass sprays.
